I think of myself as a minimalist in the kitchen. There’s a chance that because I’ve lived in small spaces for most of my adult life, or because I’ve worked in kitchens, where optimising and moving quickly are professional and sometimes moral imperatives. Gael, one of the pastry cooks, was very good at making hundreds of small diamond shapes out of thin slices of mango. Each order came with about 20 to 30 pieces, and as you might expect, there was a lot of waste. I was told to help him. I know what you’re thinking, and I’m going to say it anyway. 🙂 It’s just a bowl-cleaner. It’s very small. It wouldn’t be very useful. I’ll set things right.
Let’s talk about the price first. Probably the cheapest thing you could buy for your kitchen is this $1.30 blender. In fact, at one point, I had at least 10 of these scrapers. Next, let’s look at the size and how it’s built. This scraper is four-and-a-half by three inches, which is the right size to fit in any chest or pant pocket. The material is hard, nonporous, and flexible, but it has two sharp points on each end. Another way to say it: One end is sharper and rounded with an asymmetrical bevel like the cutting edge of a Japanese-style knife. The other end is straight. This is even though it’s made of plastic. It’s very strong. There were scratches on the surface when I accidentally ran both a serrated and a normal knife over it. There were no cracks or breaks. These scrapers can even take a hit from a heavy cleaver. People say these scrapers can handle temperatures up to 400 degrees, but I don’t think they advertise this fact (though it’s possible).
This bowl scraper can be used for a lot of different things. There is, of course, its main goal, which it does very well. It’s so easy to scrape the dough out of a bowl with this. When you move the scraper across the bowl, it feels like the scraper is stuck to the bowl’s surface. There are no holes or crevices in the scraper material, so the dough doesn’t stick to it or snag at all. Because it fits in your chest pocket, it’s not easy to find a tool that can handle medium-sized doughs that aren’t too heavy and that can be scraped.

Because of the flat, asymmetrical edge, cutting and dividing dough is a breeze because it doesn’t have any sharp edges. Every time I make gnocchi, cut logs for orecchiette or divide small amounts of dough, I use this tool. Plastic means that I don’t have to worry about scuffing up my wooden, granite, or marble table surface with it either. I also love using this tool to shape sticky doughs like high-hydration brioche. I use the flat side to round and tighten parts.
Outside of making dough, this bowl scraper shines even more than it does when you use it. Use a bowl scraper like this one to quickly and easily remove cut ingredients from your cutting board. It makes the process seem almost automatic. Carrot peels and whole wheat flour are making a mess in front of you. You need to quickly clean them up. The bowl scraper is there for you if you need it. Making purées or mashed potatoes by pushing them through a fine-mesh tamis? This is the weapon of choice. Outside of the kitchen, this scraper is good at what it does Try to find a place to put a bookmark? In this case, a bench scraper is better than a bookmark because it is waterproof and stainless steel. It will not rip, and it will not stop working. Knots in your neck? The scraper can be used for myofascial release, just like a traditional Gua Sha scraper would be used. The scraper’s simple design doesn’t mean you can’t use it for things that don’t have to do with food.
